Trailhead sign for Island Creek

Island Creek Hike & Backpacking Trip

Island Creek Trailhead - Pollocksville, NC

Sat Feb 10th - Sun Feb 11th,  2024

Let’s celebrate the outdoors with an overnight backpacking trip close to home. The area around Island Creek Forest Walk is an under explored piece of the Croatan National Forest. We will meet at the Island Creek Forest Walk parking area on Island Creek/Brice’s Creek road at 1:00. Step off time is 1:30 pm on Saturday February 10th. We will hike to a camping spot no more than 3 miles from the parking area and spend the night. In the morning we will hike back to the parking area. We should be finished no later than 10:00 Sunday morning depending on what time we leave camp.

Day hikers are welcome to come as always!

This is a completely self-supported wilderness trip. Each hiker will be responsible for his/her own food, water and equipment. There will be no facilities of any type. There will be a water source near the camp, however water will need to be treated. Please be prepared to practice Leave No Trace principles.

RSVP is requested but not required. For questions please contact Dave Whitlow at dave.finder.w@gmail.com or text at 252-571-5507

Group of hikers ready to hit the Neusiok Trail from Oyster Point Campground

Neusiok Trail Thru-Hike

Saturday - January 27th - Sunday 28th

Update 1-26-2024:  There's still some interest in the hike this weekend. The weather is still looking pretty bleak, but DIY (John) and I had a motto: we only cancel a trip for a named storm.  So the hike is still on as planned. Final determination will be who shows up on Saturday morning.   The temperature may be warm, but get wet (rain and/or perspiration) and 60 degrees will put you at risk of hypothermia. Dress and pack accordingly!  Remember water! Filtering is an option, but not a strongly suggested one. There will be NO water at the shelter.

**************

It's time to try out some of that new backpacking gear you got for Christmas! Join us for our annual Neusiok Trail hike January 27th and 28th.

We'll meet at Oyster Point Campground at 8:00 and hike to the Dogwood Camp shelter (about 11 miles).  After a relaxing night sitting around the fire sharing good food, good friends, and minimal snoring we'll continue our adventure to Equestrian Parking Area at Pine Cliffs Recreation area (again about 11 miles) and the end of the trail.

Step off time for Sunday Day Hikers is 9:00 from the Hwy 101 trailhead. This is an easy hike. Great for beginners and Hiker Trash alike.

Each hiker will be responsible for their own equipment and food, and will need to be self sufficient. Remember, there is NO water at the shelters (the pumps have been removed). We'll try to get a few gallons to the shelter or at least to the trailhead at Hwy 101. Feel free to join us for any portion of the trip; day hike Sat, Sun, or both.

Day hikers will be responsible for their own transportation unless previous arrangements are made. RSVP for overnighters is requested. RSVP for day hikers is HIGHLY encouraged, but not required.
